8th Annual Dia de San Juan Fiesta

Downtown Tucson
Arizona

When:  June 24 5 PM -  10:30 PM

West Congress St. at the Santa Cruz River
(south side, west bank)

The annual tradition of celebrating the beginning of the “season of monsoon rains” continues at Tucson’s 8th Día de San Juan Fiesta. All Tucsonans are invited to attend this free event.

The Día de San Juan Fiesta will feature the traditional procession and blessing, and charros and escaramuzas performing on horseback. Additional family entertainment includes children’s games and activities, dance groups, and live music.

Tucson’s modern-day Día de San Juan (St. John) Fiesta was started in 1998 to help the community remember the importance of water in the desert. St. John the Baptist is the patron saint of water, and because Tucson’s early settlements were highly dependent on food grown locally, celebrations were held to honor him and to ask that the crops be plentiful.

Entertainment begins at 5 p.m., with a traditional procession and ceremony honoring St. John the Baptist taking place at 6:30 p.m. The blessing of the altar will follow on site in front of the stage. Persons interested in walking in the procession are asked to meet at the southeast corner of the festival site at 6 p.m.
Attendance is free. Food and refreshments will be sold on site. Parking will be available off West Congress Street.

El Día de San Juan is sponsored by a partnership of public, private, and neighborhood organizations.
