To test a lover’s fidelity is to test one’s own ability to live with the consequences. In Mozart’s witty – yet deeply human – opera, the line between laughter and heartache is perfectly drawn. The stunning mezzo-soprano Lauren McNeese, vivacious in her portrayal of Dorabella at Lyric Opera of Chicago, brings her signature role to Arizona this fall in a score that contains some of the most sublime music Mozart ever composed.

Arizona Opera – now in its 37th Season – produces grand opera throughout the state of Arizona and is one of only three companies in the US that performs in two cities. Led by Artistic Director Joel Revzen and Executive Director Debra Harrison , the company produces five operas each season.
Arizona Opera, originally the Tucson Opera Company, was founded in 1971 by a dedicated group of opera enthusiasts. Its inaugural season featured two performances of Rossini’s The Barber of Seville in Tucson and by the 1976 – 1977 season Arizona Opera was performing complete seasons in both Tucson and Phoenix. In addition to maintaining fully-staffed offices in both cities, Arizona Opera now offers in-school touring productions and numerous outreach events as well as produces five operas each year in both communities. Proud of its dual city presence, Arizona Opera is one of the few companies in the United States to serve multiple cities.
Since its inaugural year Arizona Opera has produced over 170 fully-stage operas and concerts. The company’s artistic history is rich with a blend of opera’s traditional repertoire featuring baroque, bel canto, and verismo works, turn-of-the-century masterpieces, operettas, and American operas. Arizona Opera has also presented Wagner’s complete Ring Cycle twice, a feat that has only been accomplished in North America by four other companies. The 2008 - 2009 Season welcomes the return of Gilbert & Sullivan’s popular operetta The Mikado and four beloved operas by compositional geniuses: The Elixir of Love by Gaetano Donizetti, Don Giovanni by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Tosca by Giacomo Puccini, and Rigoletto by Giuseppe Verdi.
On stage, Arizona Opera presents both artists of international stature and emerging talent, and each season balances debut artists and the return of favorite performers. This year is no exception. Internationally acclaimed artists include the return of such beloved artists as Stephanie Blythe and Gordon Hawkins as well as debut artists such as Lisa Daltrius and Luis Ledesma. This season will also feature up-and-coming talent including the singers from the Marion Roose Pullin Arizona Opera Studio. The podium will feature debut artists Richard Buckley and Joseph Rescigno, and Arizona Opera’s Artistic Director Joel Revzen. Leading the visual component of these operas will be returning stage directors David Gately, Kelly Robinson, and Bernard Uzan, and debut artists James Robinson and Michael Scarola.
Arizona’s musical talent is showcased in its acclaimed orchestra and chorus. The Arizona Opera Orchestra, established in 2000, consists of members of symphony orchestras from Flagstaff, Phoenix, and Tucson, as well as faculty from local universities, and the chorus is comprised of Phoenix and Tucson community members and students from local universities.
